Description
History
Greco di Tufo is an ancient grape variety, imported to Campania from Thessaly by the Pelagieans and cultivated first in the Naples area and later in the Avellino area. In Avellino, near the nucleus that later became the city of Tufo, it discovered its vocation.
The Romans called it Aminea Gemina due to the tendency of the grapes to grow in twin rows in the bunch.
Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD) and Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella (1st century AD) spoke of Aminea Gemina as the best and most important variety in the Roman Empire at the time
.
A 1st-century BC fresco in Pompeii records its name.
Geography
Greco di Tufo CGDO is one of Campania’s most important white wines.
It is produced in the province of Avellino on the small, hilly vineyards of the municipalities of Altavilla Irpina, Chianche, Montefusco, Petruro Irpino, Prata di Principato Ultra, Santa Paolina, Torrioni and Tufo, of course.
The Le Otto Terre Agricultural Cooperative owes its name to these eight municipalities, which together cover a surface area of just a few square kilometers.
The climate here features significant temperature variations between day and night from July to September. The soils are composed of multi-colored clay and volcanic sediments, with Mount Vesuvius just a stone’s throw away. Climate and terroir combine to favor a slow and complete ripening of the grapes, enriching them with aromas and structure.
